Winter is approaching and we should be dreading the threat of visible dryness, flakiness and irritation to our skin.
Transitioning from humid to cool weather can be rough on the skin. Some of us experience severe rashes, irritation, and redness throughout the entire season. In cold weather, a good skincare routine does not only include constant moisturization.
It is now time to change things up, and adopt a skin care routine that will pamper your skin in the winter. Follow these winter skin care guidelines to keep your skin smooth and free of flaky skin this winter.

Be sure to stay hydrated and watch your diet
Eating right and staying hydrated can help you win half the battle for your health. A balanced diet that is free of sugar and processed foods, and consists of fruits and vegetables rich in nutrients can be beneficial for skin health. A regular intake of vitamins, antioxidants, and fluids can help keep your skin hydrated.
Wear comfortable clothing
Winter wear is stylish and trendy, but certain fabrics may irritate the skin or cause redness. Wool and nylon can cause allergies in some people. Soft fabrics, loose-fitting and comfortable, should be the mainstay of your wardrobe to avoid irritation.
Change up your facewash
Face washes that were super gentle on your skin during summer may not be effective in the winter. Try switching to a cream-based gel cleanser if your face wash is irritating. It will reduce dullness while adding a subtle layer of moisturizing to your skin.
Moisturize
The cold weather can dry out your skin, but a hydrating moisturizer is the best weapon to use. Your mantra should be to apply moisturizer at least twice daily, and especially after showering. Don’t forget to use a hand lotion after washing your hands.
Slow down the exfoliation
It is recommended to exfoliate your skin during the summer months as this will remove dead cells and make it radiant and smooth. In cold weather, exfoliating the skin regularly can make it look flaky and dry. Exfoliation frequency is also determined by your skin type. If the skin is naturally dry, exfoliation should be done gently once a week. It is best to use a hydrating, soft mask if exfoliation leads to dehydration. Masks with minimal chemical ingredients and plant extracts are a good choice.
Use Lip balmĀ
Lips do not contain sebaceous cells and therefore cannot produce the oils needed to lubricate your skin. Lip care is neglected in the winter, resulting in flaky lips and chapped skin. There are many lip balms available, including all-natural balms and lip balms with sunscreen.
Sunscreen
Even though winter sun can be soothing, it is still possible to burn your skin from UV rays. Do not forget to apply sunscreen, even if it is only for a short time. Consult with a dermatologist or skin specialist to find out which sunscreen is best for your skin. Keep it close at all times.
